Large parts: splitting & joining
How to split a model
Cut along planes at minimal-load spots and geometry joints. Slicers (Bambu Studio, Orca) have cut-with-connectors — dowel-pin or dovetail locks.
Joint types
Dowel-pin: positioning accuracy, not strength. Dovetail: a mechanical lock, strongest. Flat butt: maximum glue area. Threaded inserts — for detachable joints.
Gluing
PLA/PETG — CA glue (superglue) or epoxy. ABS — acetone welding (ABS+acetone slurry) creates a monolithic joint. Sand joints 120–240 grit before gluing.
Joint strength
A joint is always the weak point: orient it so loads compress, not tear. Mechanical lock + glue = 70–90% of monolith strength.
Finishing seams
Plastic filler → sand 240→400→600 → prime → paint. Quick result — gloss coat over the seam: it disappears under the first paint layer.
