Camping with kids

Family camping checklist: tent, clothes, safety, food, keeping busy

Checklist

Tent & site

Family tent 4+ with vestibule; camp near water — no closer than 30 m with visibility. Small kids need child-size sleeping bags.

Clothes & changes

2–3 full changes per day per kid — mud and water guaranteed. Wellies, raincoat, warm evening layer even in summer.

Keeping busy

Screen-free games: scavenger list, travel journal, night flashlights. Rain plan B — board games, books.

Safety

Kid rules: camp boundary, whistle on neck, meeting point. Separate kid first aid: fever reducers, plasters, antihistamines.

Food

Familiar food + 1–2 new dishes. Snacks at 2x calculated — fresh air stokes appetite. Kids' water kept separate.

First time

First camping — 1 night, close to home, good weather. A positive first experience is an investment in future trips.

The main rule: camping with kids is camping FOR kids. Shorter hikes, more breaks, backup options for everything. Kids adapt faster than adults — the main thing is not to stress yourself.
