Generator charging
Will your generator charge an EV during a blackout
Parameters
An EV can charge from a generator, but: onboard chargers often draw 3.5+ kW minimum — a 3 kW unit is marginal. An inverter generator is mandatory (clean sine wave — or the BMS refuses). Grounding matters — many cars won't charge without it. Don't run the generator at max power >30 min — overheating. Economics: ~5–7 l of petrol per 20 kWh ≈ pricier than grid power, but works during blackouts.
