- Stand on wide shoulders AFTER gas stations/rest areas — drivers have time to stop
- A sign with the destination (large letters) doubles your chances
- Bright clothing, neat look; remove sunglasses
- At night — only at lit gas stations; avoid roads without shoulders
- Tell someone your route and the license plate of the car you get in
Leave No Trace: pack out all trash, leave no trace. Wild camping laws change — check the rules of the specific region and national park before your trip.
