Parental control

Setting up protection on children's devices

Approaches

  • Family accounts

Google Family Link (Android/Chromebook), Apple Family Sharing + Screen Time (iOS) — managed from the parent's phone.

  • Age limits

Age-based content filters in app stores, YouTube Kids/Restricted Mode, purchase limits.

  • Screen time

Daily limits per category + 'bedtime' — block at night, not constant surveillance.

  • Talk beats control

Agreements and explanations about rules; technical limits complement trust, not replace it.

Total monitoring undermines trust and teaches circumvention, not risk avoidance. Most effective: technical limits on nights/purchases + open conversation about content. For teens, private messaging with friends is the priority.
