Soundproofing

Constructions against airborne and impact noise, materials, common mistakes

Sections

  • Airborne noise

Speech, TV — mass + resilience works: framed drywall with 50–100mm mineral wool, acoustic membranes. Weak points — outlets and gaps.

  • Impact noise

Footsteps above — only a floating screed in the upstairs unit or ceiling insulation on resilient hangers (30–50% effect).

  • Floating floor

Slab → film → 50mm mineral wool → 50–60mm screed decoupled from walls on damping tape. −15–20 dB impact noise.

  • Framed wall

Profile on vibration pads → 50mm wool → double 12.5mm drywall with staggered seams. Sealing joints with acoustic sealant is mandatory.

  • Common mistakes

Foam and cork are not soundproofing. Rigid frame mounting without pads = sound bridge. A 1% area gap destroys 50% of the effect.

Soundproofing is done before finishing — afterwards it is no longer feasible.
