Doors & Arches

Openings, door types, arches, hardware — what to consider when planning

Sections

  • Standard openings

    Interior doors: opening 700–1000mm × 2100mm; bathroom — 600mm+; entrance — 900mm+. Opening = leaf + 60–80mm for frame and foam.

  • Door types

Sliding (saves space, worse soundproofing), swing (standard, best seal), folding (narrow passages), hidden flush-to-wall.

  • Arches & half-arches

An arch instead of a door opens space between kitchen/hallway/loggia. Load-bearing walls cannot be touched — partitions only. Min arch radius = half the opening width.

  • Threshold & floor

Threshold-free — single floor level, convenient and safe. A threshold is needed in bathrooms (15–20mm step vs flooding) and at the entrance (noise/odors).

  • Closers & hardware

Magnetic latches are quieter than latch bolts. Heavy doors (40+kg) need 3 hinges. Fire-rated doors are mandatory on stairwell exits in new buildings.

Measure openings after demolition, not before — the old frame distorts dimensions.
