What each license type allows

Reference

'Downloaded free' ≠ 'can use': trial fonts in commercial logos — courts punish clients, not designers. Google Fonts (OFL) is a safe default for commercial work. When buying: check whether a separate web/app license is needed. For clients — pass the font name, not the file.

Limits

Can't sell the font alone; modified versions must use OFL + new name
