First car guide
Real budget
Car price + 15–25% for year one: insurance, 2 services, tires, customs/registration, small repairs. A $5000 car really costs $6000+ in year one. Don't spend everything on the purchase.
What to pick first
Reliability > status: Golf, Octavia, Corolla, Civic, Tucson — simple engines, cheap parts. Avoid: rare models, complex diesels, old 'premium' (repairs cost like a new budget car).
Pre-purchase checks
Mandatory: VIN report + shop inspection (lift, test drive, compression) — $50–100 saves thousands. A seller against inspection = reason to walk, not negotiate.
Paperwork
Purchase contract (MIA/notary), re-registration at an MIA service center within 10 days, mandatory liability insurance. A 'general' power of attorney is risky — prefer a contract.
First month
Full service regardless of 'just serviced': oil, filters, timing belt if mileage is suspicious, brake fluid, seasonal tires. Keep a service number handy.
