Physician liability insurance

What it covers

Professional liability: patient harm from diagnostic/treatment errors, legal costs, court-awarded compensations. Limits usually UAH 100k – 5M/year.

Is it needed

For private practice and sole-proprietor physicians — critical: one claim can close a business. For employed doctors — liability is partly on the institution, but personal civil liability remains.

Exclusions

Typically doesn't cover: unlicensed work or outside specialty, intentional harm, working intoxicated, protocol violations, criminal liability, claims known before the policy start.

Cost

Depends on specialty: therapist — thousands UAH/year, surgeon/obstetrician — 3–5× more, dentist/cosmetologist — mid-range. Limit and deductible affect price linearly.

Choosing

Ask: does it cover only compensation or also court defense; are prior-year claims included (retroactive cover); does the insurer handle regulator inquiries on denial.

Practical notes

Claims most often over: misdiagnosis, procedure complications, missing informed consent, unkept medical records. Documentation is the first defense, the policy is the second.
