Fonts in print — checklist

Artwork check before sending to the print shop

Checks

1.
Outlines or embed
Fonts converted to outlines or embedded in PDF — otherwise the shop can't open the file.
2.
Minimum point size
Positive text ≥6 pt, knockout (white on ink) ≥7 pt — otherwise it fills in.
3.
Thin lines
Minimum 0.25 pt single color; 0.5 pt for reversed text/lines.
4.
Black text = 100K
Small black text — 100% K only, not 4-color (registration will blur it).
5.
Total ink coverage
CMYK sum ≤ 300% — otherwise drying problems and set-off.
6.
Font license
For commercial print the font must allow PDF embedding.

Most common rejections: fonts not outlined, RGB elements, ink coverage >300%, microscopic text. This list covers 90% of prepress issues.
