Filament recycling
How much becomes waste
A typical farm: 10–15% of filament is waste — supports, failed prints, trimmings, spool ends. PETG and PLA recycle easiest, composites (CF, GF) almost don't.
DIY recycling
Extruders (Felfil, Filabot, 3devo) — from €300: shred → extrude new filament. Pays off at 2+ kg waste/month. Quality drops 10–20% — fine for mechanical parts, not aesthetics.
Reuse
Trimmings and supports → casting filler, thermoplastic repair (melt with a soldering iron), kid-craft plastic. Spools → organizers, stands.
Is PLA biodegradable
PLA degrades only in industrial compost (60°C+) — in regular soil it lasts decades. A 'bio' label doesn't mean home-compostable.
Handing in waste
Take-back programs: some manufacturers accept returns, local makerspaces collect PLA/PETG. Label the material — mixed plastic can't be recycled.
