Language clubs

Formats

Conversation club — café/online meetups, everyone speaks. Themed speaking club — more structured. 1:1 tandem — partners teach each other. Book club — reading + discussion.

Where to find

Meetup.com, city Facebook groups, Telegram chats (speaking club + city), libraries and cultural centers, universities, communities, Couchsurfing events.

Online

italki community, HelloTalk, Tandem — apps for native-speaker practice. Language-learning Discord servers. 60 min weekly > 3 hours monthly.

Free vs paid

Free clubs — volunteer-run, mixed level. Paid ($5–15/meetup) — philologist moderator, error correction. B1+ is fine free; A2 benefits from a moderator.

First visit

Prepare 3–5 phrases about yourself and 3 questions for others. The goal is to speak, not listen. Mistakes are the norm — clubs exist for them. Don't apologize for your level.

Start your own

No club nearby — start one: chat + café + fixed weekly time. 4–6 regulars make a viable club. Rules: one language, no lectures, speaker rotation.
