Mites, mold, pets, pollen — sources and effective countermeasures

By allergen

Dust mites

Main allergen is droppings/carcasses. Counter: weekly 60°C bedding wash, futon dryer, anti-mite covers, damp-mop floors (vacuum exhaust re-suspends). Keep humidity <50%.

Mold

Bathrooms, condensation, AC interiors breed it. Counter: ventilation, wiping condensation, AC cleaning, chlorine mold remover to kill hyphae. Dehumidify to <50%.

Pet dander

Cat allergen (Fel d 1) is saliva-borne and floats long. Counter: pets out of bedroom, HEPA purifier, weekly brushing/washing, hand-wash after contact.

Pollen intrusion

Carried in on clothes/hair. Counter: brush off at the door, shower after coming home, indoor drying in pollen season, air purifier. Ventilate in low-pollen hours.

Priorities

Most impact: bedding/bedroom (longest exposure) → flooring (carpet→hardwood) → humidity → purifier. A perfect bedroom beats a half-done house.

For persistent symptoms, get a specific-IgE test at an allergy clinic — control starts from identifying the culprit. Allergens accumulate, so countermeasures take weeks to show effect.
