PPE safety

Protective-equipment checklist for chemistry

Details

  • Eyes

Sealed safety goggles for splashes; contacts — no; a face shield when working with acids.

  • Hands

Nitrile gloves for most, latex — not for solvents; check the compatibility chart.

  • Breathing

A fume hood for volatiles; an A1/P2 respirator for solvent vapors; a 'plain mask' isn't protection.

  • Clothing

Lab coat/apron, closed shoes, hair tied; cotton, not synthetics — they melt.

PPE is the last line, not the first: first dilution, fume hood, small volumes. The 'don't work alone' rule with hazardous substances isn't a formality.
