Pregnancy Glossary
Pregnancy medical terms in plain language
Pregnancy hormone — doubles every 48–72 h in the first trimester. Trend matters more than a single value.
Combined test (ultrasound + labs) for chromosomal risk: 11–13+6 and 16–20 weeks. Probability, not diagnosis.
Ultrasound measuring blood flow in placental/umbilical vessels — checks fetal supply.
Cardiotocography: fetal heartbeat + uterine activity. From 32–34 weeks.
Placenta covers the cervix — bleeding risk, often a cesarean indication.
BP + protein in urine after week 20 — dangerous complication, monitoring mandatory.
First-trimester nausea/vomiting — in 70–80%. Severe form (hyperemesis) needs treatment.
Ultrasound length tracks preterm risk: <25 mm is a warning sign.
Amniotic fluid index (AFI): 5–25 cm is normal. Oligo/polyhydramnios needs monitoring.
Braxton-Hicks contractions: irregular, no cervical change, ease with rest.
Cervical opening in cm: labor from ~4 cm, full at 10 cm for pushing.
Anesthesia into the epidural space — removes pain, keeps consciousness and participation.
First milk days 2–4 — thick, yellowish, antibody-rich. Transitional milk follows.
Written birth preferences: positions, analgesia, contact, cord. A flexible document.
Injection for Rh− mothers: blocks antibody formation against Rh+ fetal blood.
