Introducing solids

WHO scheme by age: what to introduce, in what order, and how to read reactions

Baby's age, months

Start of solids

From 4–6 mo per baby's readiness: single-ingredient veg purees (zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower) or dairy-free cereals. New food — 1 tsp in the morning, 5–7 days to watch reaction.

Basic rules

  • • One new food at a time — 5–7 days pause to watch for allergy
  • • Offer in the morning/daytime — to see the reaction before evening
  • • Don't force — solids complement, not replace breast/formula until 1 year
  • • Allergens (egg, fish, gluten, nuts) — small doses, but don't delay too long
  • • Forbidden before 1 year: honey (botulism), salt, sugar, unpasteurized, whole cow's milk
