Mediation
What mediation is
Out-of-court dispute resolution with a neutral mediator — parties find the solution themselves, the mediator only structures talks. Faster and cheaper than court; result is an agreement, not a verdict.
When it fits
Family, labor, neighbor, business, inheritance disputes — where relations matter. Not for: criminal cases, high power-asymmetry without protection, when a precedent is needed.
How it works
Mediation agreement → joint sessions + private caucuses → settlement memorandum. Under the Mediation Law the process is confidential — statements can't be court evidence. The agreement can be notarized.
Cost & terms
Private mediator: UAH 2000–8000/session, inheritance or business disputes — 3–10 sessions. Court-annexed mediation is free in some jurisdictions. Compare to 6–24 months of litigation + court fees.
If it fails
Mediation doesn't exclude court — it's an attempt, not a substitute. No agreement — go to court; mediation costs are small. A partial agreement also binds.
