Pack-years calculator
Pack-years measure cumulative smoking: cigarettes/day × years ÷ 20. The ≥20 threshold means high lung cancer and COPD risk

Pack-years = (cigarettes/day ÷ 20) × years. ≥20 pack-years is the main criterion for low-dose CT lung screening. Quitting lowers risk but the history stays.
What happens after quitting
- 20 min — blood pressure and pulse normalize
- 24 h — CO cleared from blood
- 2–12 wk — circulation and lung function improve
- 1 year — CHD risk halved
- 10 years — lung cancer risk ~halved
- 15 years — CHD risk ≈ never-smoker
