Course copyright
Who owns it
An instructor's course — the school owns rights only if the contract says so (work-for-hire/assignment). Without a contract, the instructor owns it and can walk away with the content.
What's protected
Copyright covers: texts, videos, slides, homework. NOT covered: methodology, ideas, facts, course format. A competitor can make the 'same course' in their own words.
Third-party content
Web photos, video clips, music — only under license (Creative Commons/stock) or permission. 'It was online' isn't a court argument.
Theft protection
Watermark videos, sign materials, register authorship (deposit). You can't fully prevent theft — registered authorship gives you the legal tool.
Student rights
Terms: course access is personal, resale prohibited. Student work in ads — only with written consent.
If stolen
Document (dated screenshots, notary) → DMCA complaint to platform → claim/lawsuit. Pirate resources — go through hosting/registrar.
