Upskilling

how to choose courses and training that actually raise income

Upskilling

  • Start with the gap: Review 20 vacancies for the target role and list the skills you lack — learn toward the gap, not 'for the record'.
  • Formats: Self-study (free, slow), online courses (structure+deadlines), mentoring (fastest, pricey), project work (most effective).
  • Course evaluation: Ask: is there practice with feedback, who teaches (practitioner or 'coach'), graduate outcomes after 6 months, refunds.
  • Red flags: Income promises, 'profession in 3 weeks', no syllabus before payment, aggressive 'today only' discounts.
  • Budget: Norm: 5–10% of monthly income on learning per quarter. Expensive course — only if it directly unlocks a role with +30% salary.
  • Time budget: Realistic: 5–7 hrs/week with a full-time job. A '40-hour' course = 6–8 weeks, plan the calendar.
  • Certificates: Carry weight: AWS/Azure/Google Cloud, PMP, ACCA, language certs (IELTS, TestDaF). Don't: 'certificate of attendance'.
  • Measuring results: 3 months after a course something concrete must change: new task, promotion, new role, portfolio piece.
