Freelance platforms
fee and model comparison: Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, local
Freelance platforms
Upwork:
10% fee (used to be tiered 20/10/5). Connects cost per proposal. Strong for long contracts and enterprise clients.
Fiverr:
20% freelancer fee. 'Gig' model — clients come to you. Good for packaged services, bad for custom work.
Freelancer.com:
10% or $5 (whichever is greater). Many low-budget projects, strong price competition.
Toptal/premium:
3–5% client-side, 0% for freelancers — but ~3% acceptance. Rates $60–150+/hr, seniors only.
Ukrainian:
Freelancehunt (~7–9%), Weblancer (~5–10%), Kabanchik — low fees, UAH, local clients, smaller budgets.
Direct clients:
0% fees — LinkedIn, referrals, own site. Goal: shift 20–30% of platform flow into direct relationships within a year.
Hidden costs:
Withdrawals (Payoneer ~2%, wire $15–30), conversion, sole-proprietor taxes — the real 'fee' is often 15–25% total.
Strategy:
Don't rely on one platform — one account ban = zero income. 2 platforms + direct clients = a resilient model.
