Soil reclamation & protection

Soil protection norms, reclamation of damaged plots, erosion control

Mandatory measures

Works disturbing topsoil require a reclamation plan: stripping and storing the fertile layer, restoring relief, returning the layer.

Reclamation after damage

Craters, trenches, track lanes: demining (SES/certified operators) → levelling → technical and biological reclamation.

Erosion control

Slope washout: buffer strips, gully dams, strip cropping across the slope. Tolerable loss ~5–10 t/ha/yr — above that soil degrades faster than it rebuilds.

Preventing degradation

Compaction control (subsoiling), organic matter balance (residues + green manure), pesticide residue monitoring — field agrochemical passport every 5 years.

Legal base

Ukrainian Land Code (soil protection art. 96, reclamation art. 57–62), Land Protection Act, DBN reclamation standards, field certification requirements.

Field certification

Agrochemical passport (pH, humus, NPK, heavy metals) — the mandatory document to detect degradation and the base for claims/compensation.

The land user bears the duty of soil protection (LC art. 96): degradation, erosion, littering are grounds for landlord claims and fines. Record wartime damage in an act with the State Geocadastre — it is the base for reclamation compensation programmes.
