☐ Windows/openings
Single glass + aluminum sash causes ~half of heat loss. Improve with double glazing, thermal curtains, gap tape. Extend curtain rails wall-to-wall.
☐ LED lighting
Incandescent→LED saves ~85%, fluorescent→LED ~50%. Start with the longest-used rooms (living, entry).
☐ Fridge settings/placement
'Medium' is the standard setting. Leave ventilation space, avoid sun. ~70% full is efficient. Units >10y old — replacement saves a lot.
☐ AC usage
1°C of setpoint ≈ 10% (cooling 28°C/heating 20°C). Monthly filter clean. Continuous running can beat cycling depending on insulation.
☐ Standby power
TV, microwave, bidet seat, water heater standby = a few % of home use. Switchable power strips for unused devices.
☐ Hot water/bath
Don't drop storage temp too low (Legionella: store ≥60°C). Fewer reheats, bath lid, water-saving showerhead.
☐ Insulation/airtightness
Check attic/underfloor insulation. Drafts — door closers, weatherstripping. Renters: DIY secondary glazing (corrugated plastic) helps a lot.
☐ Contract plan review
Check breaker amperage and plan against usage — verify with the utility's usage data. All-electric/night-rate fit too.
Impact order: insulation (windows) > hot water/bath > AC > fridge > lighting > standby. First step is checking your usage data to see where electricity actually goes.
