IDP volunteering

Programs and formats for helping internally displaced persons — what works vs what just looks good

Help formats

  • Housing and settling

Settlement support: compact living, shared housing, utility help for first months. Works better than handing out blankets.

  • Documents and status

Help with IDP certificates, restoring passports/records, pension/social payments — free legal clinics exist (PDL, Right to Protection).

  • Employment

Career guidance, retraining courses, employer connections. State employment service + ILO/UNHCR/NEST programs.

  • Children and education

School/kindergarten enrollment at the new location, online access to the 'home' school, psychology groups, clubs.

  • Psychological support

Support groups, crisis lines (free OSCE/IOM lines). Peak need — first 3 months after relocation.

  • Evacuation logistics

Volunteer convoys, evacuation trains, station hubs. Coordinate through OVA headquarters, not blind.

  • Language and integration

Language clubs, cultural events, neighbor initiatives — the key to turning 'moved' into 'living'.

Core principle: IDPs aren't 'aid objects' — they're people with professions and dignity. Most valuable: employment, housing, documents; least: one-off item handouts nobody asked for. Report to donors as transparently as for cash collections.
